Small Holiday Party Venues in Reno: Restaurant, Hotel or Private Event Space?

Blurred holiday lights.

If you’re searching for a small holiday party venue in Reno for coworkers, friends or family, you’ve probably noticed the results are a mix of restaurants, hotels, golf courses and event spaces. They can all work. They just work best for different kinds of parties.

The best small holiday party venue in Reno depends on how much privacy, flexibility and atmosphere your group wants. For groups of 15 to 50 in Reno, there are the usual suspects: a private room at a restaurant, a hotel bar, an actual event room at a casino, a golf clubhouse. And then you have your private event spaces, including the boutique venue (yes, we’re fans). Restaurants and hotels can be convenient and they handle food for you. A private venue gives you the whole space to yourselves, with more say over the menu, decor and timeline.

To help all you small holiday party planners out there, we’re walking through the pros and cons of all these options. And because we love you and we want what’s best for you, we’re also sharing what to ask before you sign the contract.

How Reno’s small holiday party venues compare

If you’re on the fence about the kind of venue space that best meets your small holiday party needs, let’s hit the highlights.

Restaurant private rooms

A restaurant is the simplest option when the party is mostly about the meal. The kitchen, staff and bar are already there, and your only job is to plan the menu. The trade-off is space: private rooms are built for sitting and eating, which means less room to mingle, play games or give a toast without the next table hearing it. And sure, you may be in a “private room,” but there’s probably a curtain involved.

Hotel bars and event rooms

Hotels make sense when guests are traveling or you want rooms nearby after the party. Event rooms are flexible, and hotel catering teams do this often. Rooms can feel generic, though, and service charges and fees can add up beyond the advertised minimum. Plus, in Reno, “event rooms” are very often in casinos—kind of overkill for a small holiday party.

Golf clubhouses

Clubhouses often have private rooms, good views and polished catering. They make a lot of sense if your team already golfs or wants a country-club feel, but be honest about how much golfing your crew will be doing at a holiday party (read: none?). Check the drive time for your guests, since many courses are a decent drive in Reno, and confirm winter hours.

Private boutique venues

Flow's Boutique Venue in Reno, NV

Flow’s in all her glory!

A private venue gives your group the whole space, not just a room. That usually means more control over decor, music, layout and timing. It also means more personality, which matters for a holiday party. The main limit is size, so confirm capacity for both seated and standing setups.

Questions to ask before you book a small holiday party venue

Whichever way you’re leaning, here’s what to ask when you actually reach out to talk with someone. Call it small party planning 101, courtesy of the event planning pros at Flow’s!

  1. What’s the capacity for my format? Seated dinners need much more space per guest than standing receptions. Ask for both numbers (and check out our post on venue capacity in boutique venues).

  2. Will we have the space to ourselves? Ask if other guests or diners will share entrances, restrooms or the bar.

  3. Is there a minimum spend, a rental fee or both? Get the total, including service charges, gratuity and tax.

  4. Who handles food and drinks? Some venues require their own kitchen, some have approved caterers and some let you bring your own. We have a detailed post that walks through exactly what it means when a venue has an in-house caterer that might be helpful reading.

  5. How long is the rental, and when can we set up? Holiday parties often run late, so check the end time and overtime rates.

  6. Can we decorate and bring in entertainment? Ask about music, games, photo setups and any decor rules.

  7. Where will guests park? Parking in December in Reno can be tight, so ask about nearby lots, garages and rideshare drop-off.

  8. What dates are still open? Fridays and Saturdays in early to mid-December go first. Weeknights and January dates are often easier to get (which is why booking early is so darn smart).

When a private venue is the best call

A private venue is usually the best fit when the party is about being together, not just having dinner out. It works well when you want:

  • The whole space to yourselves, with no other diners or hotel guests

  • A setting that already feels festive, with no need to hide a conference room

  • Room to mingle, give toasts, exchange gifts or play games

  • Control over the menu, music and timeline

Cocktail garnishes

We highly recommend a cute cocktail bar.

That’s exactly the kind of party Flow’s Boutique Venue was made for. Picture your team or family filling a lovingly restored 1924 Victorian in downtown Reno, with every room to yourselves. We host corporate and family holiday parties for up to 50 guests (with space for a few more if you need it), and every booking is a private buyout of the whole darn house. Gather around the dining room table, turn the sitting area into gift-swap headquarters, and spill out to the covered patio and courtyard, with room for a cozy outdoor bar. The full kitchen is ready for your caterer, a private chef if you’re feeling fancy, or heck, take-out if your group really, really loves pizza.

The practical details are covered, too. Tables and chairs are included, and our team sets up and breaks down the space to match your floor plan after a walkthrough, ideally a few weeks before your party. Guests park in a private lot right behind the building, so no one spends the first 20 minutes circling downtown.

If all of this sounds like your kind of holiday party, we’d love to host you! Still in the early planning stages? Our guide for throwing a holiday party your team will remember (fondly, not with a wince) is a great place to start. Check out our gallery for a little visual inspiration, browse our rates or get crazy and schedule a visit to see the space in person. Weekday dates work especially well for team parties and are often easier to book in December, but we still have a few openings for weekends. Just don’t wait!
